AER Sanctuary
About the Program
The AER sanctuary was inspired by two very special mustangs who landed a space at Katie's farm in Oregon in 2021. After many years of dedicated training, creativity, love, authenticity, and shared growth, Katie realized these boys needed sanctuary. While these two BLM mustangs have found their way to a sanctuary in California, they have left their mark and message, that not all horses are meant for a life with a job. AER offers limited sanctuary space for horses who have been through substantial training with a AER approved trainer.

SANCTUARY HERD
For cases where training is not enough, we believe horses and other equines still deserve a safe place to live out their days. Here at AER, we have limited sanctuary space for horses and other equines with no where else to go.

WYNTER
Rescued in 2021 by 3 Sisters Equine Refuge from the Warm Springs Reservation in Oregon, Wynter arrived just before giving birth to her final foal, Autymn, who is currently enrolled in Ayla's Training School. Now in her mid-30s, Wynter remains a powerhouse mustang mare with a strong sense of self. While she is still largely wild, she has developed an enthusiastic fondness for mashes and treats, enjoys playing in the hose water, and is slowly warming to gentle human interaction.
After two years of dedicated work with our trainer and founder, Katie Dixon, to help her navigate life in domestication, it was decided that Wynter is best served living out her days in sanctuary. She participates in limited, thoughtful, training to support necessary veterinary and farrier care, and otherwise enjoys a peaceful retirement—grazing Vermont’s green pastures alongside her mustang herd.
